BSM and AA are the top 2 nationwide recognized driving schools.

both of them have sophisticated training techniques in place to train you as a competent driver.

disadvantages :
1) most of them have a huge wait list , you may not get a slot unless you book months in advance.
2) Price per lesson can be upto 25 per hour where as you find local driving schools doing as low as 17 per hour.

:idea: if you have a US licence you can drive in the UK for 1 year with insurance. Within the 1 year time you you can take minimum required lessons and obtain your full UK licence thus minimizing the learning curve and cost.

Applying for provisional licence and selecting a theory test centre are straight forward steps which you can do yourself. The training school will only post your licence application and select a theory test date using the DVLA website and charge you big fees. The theory test by itself is quite simple except for hazard preception which can be a bit tricky. But there are CD's available and it is cheaper to fail a test - you will most certainly pass the second time, rather than pay the school. For those coming from the US, manual gears might initially be a probblem and it is a good idea to join either a school or use services of authorised individual tutuors. The later are cheaper. You will find them in Yellow Pages. But if you are comfortable with manual gears then engage a tutuor for 5-10 classes before the practical test to know what the examiners look for and you should be fine. Don't forget the time lags-read weeks and weeks, to get a provisional licence, theory test date and finally practical test date. Depending on the city you are in, it could take anywhere between 3-8 months or more to get you licence!! Happy motoring.

Raoms,

See DSA website: http://www.dsa.gov.uk/mockpaper/theoryintro.htm

Also see http://www.theorytestadvice.co.uk/Train ... gaids.html

to get an overview of aids available. It would be particularly useful to get the Hazard Perception-Roadsense video/DVD. Most first timers fail in this section.

Helo,

I wonder what a post related to UK Driving is doing on the HSMP forum? Anyways, I know for sure, its easy to get one if you know How to Drive :lol: Also, I remember one of my chineese team member in UK failed 5th time in the test and you know what was happened in her last try;

She was doing all set but once the person next to her told that she have cleared the test this time, she drove like a bullet to drop the driving test conductor at driving office. Make sure you guyz don't do this. :P
Regards,
Afzal
