NTL what does it entail?

The 'No Time Limit' stamp,I know about the visa transfer to new passport bit, but what does it mean when someone actually has it in their passport?
I feel like a complete numbskull, please bare with me :oops:

It means you are not subject to immigration control in the UK. I.e. that you have indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

Right, one last question..
Does someone who has NTL need to apply for NTL every time their passports expires?

You can travel with the old passport with the NTL stamp together with the new passport.
