Producing tenancy agreement at heathrow airport

Post by first2last4 » Sun Jan 14, 2007 12:54 pm

Guys I've asked this question on another topic
first2last4 wrote: Can someone confirm if I should carry the tenancy agreement in case the immigration officer ask me about my stay?

I stay in my current address from last 9 months but I have not renewed the tenancy agreement as the landlord share a good relation with me.
Though I do have all the other documents which have my name and address like Council Tax, BT Bills, Bank Statement.... Or to be on safe side I should get a new tenancy agreement created?

Thanks for you replies guys
Please can someone share his experience if I am off for annual holiday for a month to India do I need show tenancy agreement for accomodation proof on my return at Heathrow. I am on WP which expires till 2010...

Would really appreciate your reply.

I have never been asked to produce a tenancy agreement at Heathrow and have been travelling quite a lot since being on a WP. I used to at first carry a letter from my company saying I still work there but even this was never required.

As long as the officer is comfortable that you still work for the same company on your return I don't think they ask for any evidence (but of course it might depend on your case and previous immigration history).

This question maybe relevant if you here in the UK as a visitor but as a Work Permit holder, I doubt you will asked about your accommodation arrangement by an Immigration Officer.

After all, different people have different arrangements (e.g. shared accommodation with strangers, living with friends/relatives, cohabiting with partner, occassional stay with mistress ) without affecting their ability to work.

The Immigration Officer is more likely to be concerned about a material change of your working circumstances such as change of employer etc.

Work permit holders do not need to carry any additional documentation other than their passport and visa to reenter the UK as often as they like. The only question that immigration officers generally ask work permit holders when they reenter the UK is whether or not they are still working for the same company that their work permit is issued for. Of course this is a bit of a silly question as there is no way for the immigration officer to verify this without substantial effort, and anyone who is working outside the conditions of their work permit is highly unlikely to admit this to an immigration officer.

There is no statutory requirement to carry anything other than your passport and visa to prove that you meet the criteria for readmission.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

I have had different visas/ECs over the years - visitors, student, WHMV, permit free, HSMP and ILR and I have never been asked to show anything other than my passport at Heathrow/Gatwick (I travel several times a year)
