Thai friend eligible for UK citizenship?

Post by tommytommy » Mon Oct 08, 2012 6:29 pm

Hi, my Thai friend moved to the UK as a student (on scholarship) in 2005. They are now at their penultimate/final year of university and wish to settle in the UK.

There is alot of verbose information around, and basically they want to know if they can just apply for British Citizen ship/ hold a dual Thai-British passport

Thanks
Thomas

I don't think they have an ILR/PR, does that mean it's a no go? :(

One cannot apply for British citizenship unless one has been granted settled status in the UK.

Ok. IRL is settlement is it not. So I will apply for this - is it likely they will get it as they've spent most of the last 7+ years in the UK? They might of been outside UK for 3 months some years though, but only just

Further, how does one obtain a joint Thai-British passport (is it possible)? To hold a british passport do they have to be a British Citizen?

Thanks
Thomas

Settlement = settled status = ILR / PR.

On what basis does the person in question (you/your friend) intend to apply for settlement as there is no provision of settlement after having lived in the UK for 7 years as a student.
Only British citizens can apply for a British passport.
UK allows dual nationality so if Thailand allows dual nationality then you / your friend may hold both British and Thai passports.
