BBC Radio 4 coverage today

Post by LondonBlonde » Fri Jan 19, 2007 5:40 pm

I heard a ten minute discussion on Radio 4 today with Liam Byrne. He sounds absolutely proud that many of us will be sent packing due to the "more robust and fair" new rules.

I now have less hope for those who don't meet the new criterea. As long as Byrne stays minister of Immigration, things are unlikely to change.

Byrne is a graduate of Harvard Business School, and a member of the Christian Socialist Movement.

Making more sense now?

LondonBlonde,
So what was his attitude like. What was his justification for the rule changes, etc ?. That discussion would have been good to hear. I'm sorry I missed it.

You can listen to it now if u click on the link on page LondonBlonde gave.

First half of it was some Indian people talking, and a casual listener could be forgiven for thinking it was just Doctors who are affected.
Doctors association thought they should have been consulted.
One person did mention nonEU people are affected, and solicitors.
It was mentioned that there were guarantees/promises

Then it got to Liam Byrne, who seemed quite firm and un-fazed by it all.
keywords that stood out to me were:
raising the bar, making UK similar to aussie points system
Those with most to give are those allowed to stay
Doesnt want open door to rest of world
People (Uk citizens?) want hurdles for those to come here
Always been clear rules might change
All changes are in line with John Reids decisions last year.
