Does anyone know what documents are required to prove that you have been residing for 5 years in Britian . Also what is the process to apply for British Citizenship once your five years are up.

Your passport should be enough, however if you are an EEA national then attach P60's (Not P45 as they just prove you left employment)

Just to add - normally, you can apply only after 6 years of residence in the UK although the residence requirements are only examined over the last 5 years. This is because you need to hold PR/ILR for 1 year before applying (unless married to a British citizen).

You became a Portugese citizen - did you exercise EU Treaty rights (work/study as an EEA citizen under EU directives) in the UK? If so, your best way forward is to apply for a permenent residency sticker (using form EEA3) after 5 years residence. That is voluntary, but free, and it will make your application for naturalisation as a British citizen *much* smoother later.
