German residence permit for employment, please suggest

I got a job offer from Germany, marketing manager for a well known IT/media company.

There are currently 3 ways to get residence permit for work in Germany; General, Specialist and self-employment. I asked the embassy which one should be applicable to me, and they said I might get the General one... And they said it would take 2-3 months to get an answer after application!

Is there anyone who got residence permit for work for germany? How long did it take? How many years of residence did they give?
