need advice on marriage issue

Hello chaps, I have a friend who is a british national and he wants to marry a girl who is on a student visa and has just sent her visa for extension. Can they both get married and the girl can then apply for spouse visa or does she need to have a valid visa status or a minimum valid visa for marriage when they give the notice to marry.

In a worst scenario if the girl doesnt get a visa extension, can she marry and apply for a spouse visa then, will she have to go back.

She can marry irrespective of her status, but she will need to prove her identity so if her passport is with the UKBA she might have a problem with that.

After the marriage, her application for leave to remain as the partner of a British citizen would be very much dependant on her having a valid immigration status.
