applying for permanent residency after 5 yrs

supposedly you are allowed to get residency after 5yrs in many countrys. i would like to know however, if you studied in a country for 4 yrs, does that count toward that 5 yrs?

Sorry, no, it's not that simple. In most countries there is no automatic route for students to get permanent residence. The United Kingdom is more generous than most - but permanent residence for students is only available after 10 years, not 5.

The only exception to all this is that those citizens of EEA states and Switzerland who study in another EEA state for 5 years do obtain an automatic permanent resident status.
