Tax Payment for Self Employed

Hi Experts,

I am self employed(registered from June 2012) sole trader and started working from june 2012 and going for Tier 1(general)extension in Jan 2013. I never worked anywhere in UK before june 2012.

Do I need to pay all the tax before applying for extension? or I can pay it later?

I was told that I can pay tax after 1 year, as I don't fall under financial year. However I am still not sure whether this is true or not.

Please provide your inputs !!

Income tax for 2012/13 is due on 31 January 2014.
