How long can a EU citzen stay in uk without permit

Post by PewPew » Tue Feb 06, 2007 8:53 am

hi

I keep reading two lots of conflicting information. One states that if u visit on a eu passport you can only stay for 6 months in the uk. The other statement i read says you can stay as long as u can support yourself if you do not intend to work.

which is correct ?

What exactly did the statements say, and where did they come from?

Although there are some provisos and conditions, for intents and purposes an EU citizen who is a normal, functioning member of the human race can stay in the UK indefinitely.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

When I first visited the UK in 1988, as an Italian citizen, I was given a piece of paper at immigration which stated that I was allowed to stay for six months. I think it also said that if I wanted to stay longer than that I would need to show that I could support myself without recourse to public funds. When I came back in the following years I wasn't given anything. I wonder when the regulations changed.
