No! That's fine. You new extension comes into play only after your old one expires. You COS should also have this anyway.
For example, if your visa expires 14 Aug 2014, then your COS will say 15 Aug 2014 is the date you need the extension from and can be issued 3 months before that: 15 May 2014 (also Cos is valid only for 3 months). You are only extending it earlier, not shortening the length of visa issue. If the COS is given for 1 yr extension (max is 3yrs), then you should get a visa of 1yr + 14 days from the date of visa expiry - not from the date of extension application.
