I can see a lot of frustration and depression on this forum for those waiting for naturalisation decisions.

If I may suggest, you all should try and make a peaceful demonstration to the government in regards to them not keeping their six months promise and also try and speed up the process. In that case you will all be heard.

Immigrants are so silent here in Ireland and they are dying in silence. You also could write a letter and get all of you sign it outlining your difficulties to the Dep of Justice. Hows that for a start?

Hi guys, me and another colleague got through today. I got the same old reply of waiting for Garda report whereas they told him, the application is at advanced stage.

No confirmation regarding the ceremony and she would not say anything.

I got the same reply few weeks ago but then I got the same reply last week. dot know what to make of it.

It is a simply copy and paste automated message. Disregard that message if you will as it is not accurate. To know exactly the status of your citizenship application you will have to ring the Citizenship Division yourself. Then they can tell you precisely whats going on with your application.

Wow some people even got their citizenship approved just after 1 month of application!. I am simply speechless in regards to how Ireland are treating immigrants here. Somethings are better left unsaid

It not only that, when you ring INIS they do not give you time line when they expect decision on any application.

The 6 months processing time does not make sense if there is no time line give to each application. i.e- Say from 6 to 48months!!

Just a bit of news! I have talked to the lady in INIS helpline and she said I will get a letter in next 3 weeks. Not sure approval or rejection as she didn't disclose this information. So let's hope more approvals on the way in next 3 weeks time. I applied in April 2011 on basis of 5 year Working Visa.

I think most people will get their citizenship application decision by the 2nd ceremony which will he held this year.
I have done a bit of research just for all of you, and its good news for those of you that are waiting too long, depressed, mentally stressed, lost everything etc.

When the minister came into office in March 2011 there were approximately 22,000 citizenship applications awaiting decision.

Since March 2011 until now, about 30,000 citizenship applications have been made.

Now the minister has made a decision on more than 43,000 applications.


30,000 + 22,000 = 52,000 - 43,000 = 9,000 applications currently waiting for decision.

This may be the reason why there was no ceremony on February because up to 4,000 decisions have not been made yet, given the fact that about 9,000 left!

Also for some people given out rumors that the Minister does not care about making citizenship decisions as quickly as he use to make. It is a pure lie.

That is very useful and encouraging but it feels they will increase the fees before the send any approvals.

Dont worry yourself. Even if the fees were to be increased it wont affect existing citizenship applicants like you. It will apply to new citizenship applicants from the day the Fee Increase was brought in.

Yes I can. I will write in details about how I came about to 93%. This information is from Dail questions/answers directly from the minister.

There were 19,900 in 2012 and the number increases on an annual basis.

I then estimated from March 2011 when the minister came into office until Dec 2011 to be an additional 8,400 applications.

I also estimated the application for 2013 to be 20,000 and/or over and then divided it by 12 to get approximately 1,700 for January that will are in at the moment

In total this will give you 30,000. 19,000 + 8,400 + 1,700 = 30,000

It means that you'll be invited to the next ceremony or 2 if you're lucky.

For everybody's inforation - it looks like the next naturalization ceremony hasn't been schedueld yet. My application was granted last year and I just sent an email to confirm they have all they need from me and when the next ceremony will be held, and I got that answer:

We have received everything, you will be invited to the next available
ceremony. There are no dates confirmed yet for ceremonies in 2013.

Deputy Pádraig Mac Lochlainn (SF) asked the Minister for Justice and Equality the number of persons awaiting a decision on their application for Irish citizenship when he took office; the average waiting time for a decision on their application; the number of people currently awaiting a decision and the current waiting time for a decision.

Deputy Pádraig Mac Lochlainn (SF) asked the Minister for Justice and Equality since he took office, the number of people applying for Irish citizenship that have had their application approved or refused.

Minister for Justice and Equality (Deputy Alan Shatter): I propose to take Questions Nos. 470 and 471 together.

When I came into office in March, 2011, I was determined to tackle the backlog that had built up in the processing of applications for citizenship. At that time there was approximately 22,000 citizenship applications awaiting decision, approximately 17,000 of which had been awaiting decision for in excess of 6 months with an average waiting time of 26 months.

The series of measures I introduced have resulted in a major improvement in the position with decisions having being made on some 33,000 applications since coming into office. Over a comparable period, between March 2009 and October 2010 a total of 18,500 cases were decided representing an almost 80% increase in throughput. Moreover, approximately 4,000 of the 2009 case-load related to ineligible minors that involved minimal processing.

Almost 30,000 of these applications were approved after due process, while around 3,000 were deemed ineligible or were refused because they did not comply with the statutory criteria such as being of good character, lawful residence and so forth. It is important to note that the grant of citizenship is not a right; indeed it is a privilege and is given in accordance with the law.

In considering the volume of cases currently in hand a number of factors have to be taken into account including, as detailed above, the volume of cases processed as well as new cases coming on hand. Also to be taken into account is the peaks and troughs of decision making which is linked to the timing of our citizen ceremonies. Accordingly, there are wide variations in the statistics of cases on hand from one week to the next. For example, next week will see the 56th, 57th and 58th citizenship ceremonies being held with a further series of ceremonies planned for early December.

As the Deputy will appreciate there has been a major improvement on what hitherto had been unacceptable delays in the system. We are still on course to meet the very ambitious target of processing 70% of all standard non-complex cases within six months of receipt of applications. I am determined that we achieve that target and go on to build on the excellent progress to date. Considerable resources continue to be deployed to process applications and huge credit is due to the staff in the area for taking on the challenge.

The Deputy will also be aware that alongside the improvements in processing, in June 2011, I introduced formal citizenship ceremonies for the first time since the foundation of the State. The ceremonies, which are being met with universal approval, allow candidates for citizenship make their declaration of fidelity to the Irish nation and loyalty to the State and receive their certificate of naturalisation in a meaningful and dignified manner which befits the importance and solemnity of the occasion. I was pleased to note that the Citizenship Division of the Immigration Service was this summer awarded one of the Taoiseach’s Public Service Excellence awards of 2012 for their work over the past year and for their enthusiastic embracing of the reforms that have taken place.

i applied for naturalisation 4 months ago(base on marriage to an irish citizen), and after 2 weeks i got Acknowledgement letter. to tell me everything they need they got and in 70 percent of cases take about 6 months to get an answer !
do you think this is right and i have a chance to get an answer by 2 months time??
