residence card lost/stolen whilst abroad

This is a theoretical question that always occurs to me: what do you do when your non-eu wife has their residence card stolen when outside the uk? Are you now stuck in that country? Do you speak to the british embassy? Assume you have other proof of id and a marriage certificate with you to prove your relationship, what do you do?
