How to calculate absence from UK

Dear readers,

I have a silly questions but I am getting confused (after reading few posts) on how to count the absence days:

If I left the UK for example on the 05th December 2012 and returned the 10th December 2012, would I count:
6 days (includes the day I left and the day I returned)
5 days (includes the day I left as being away) or,
4 days (excluding days I left and returned) aka "Whole days"

Only whole days. so it is 4 days
