Sending cancelled passports with first passport application?

I applied for my first british passport today after naturalization.

I only included my present Indian uncancelled(valid) passport with the application. I did not include the previous cancelled passport.

The cancelled passport had my initial visas (now expired) used to enter the UK in 2004/06.

I notice on this board that some members have included expired/cancelled passports as well. But, I wasn't asked to do that.

I called IPS this morning as well regarding this, and they also said that they want the recent valid passport only and not the older cancelled passport(s).

section 3A of the passport application form clearly states "all uncancelled passports".
