referee's cancelled british passport number

Post by rogerroger » Fri Mar 30, 2007 11:59 am

Hello,

My wife is going to apply for naturalisation tomorrow. and one of our referees thoguh a british national has had her passport cancelled(since it was stolen).

On page 12 of the naturlisatrion application, there is a box which asks for the current british citizen passport number. she has her cancelled british passport number, would use of her cancelled british passport number still be OK?

I would think that it would be. The main reason that they now require a passport number (as opposed to the referee just being a British citizen) is so that they can verify the signature of the referee which is help on file when the referee would have applied for the passport. The cancellation of the passport wouldn't change the fact that they still have the referee's signature on record and can therefore verify the authenticity of the signature.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

to be sure, I would call the home office and check, since if the passport is cancelled, but a new one isn't yet issued, I'm not entirely sure whether the referee would count as a current british passport holder, and would be better to be safe than sorry i'd think
