Ok, my information is from vfs Victoria . I hope you are right.
Unless it's been over 3 months since naturalisation why would you bother though?
In any case, good luck. Do let us know how you get on.

I'm inclined towards ssachida.. That's what I understood that you can't apply for visa and surrender certificate at the same time. However, hope you prove us wrong and it would be helpful to a lot of members if you can apply both at the same time.
Do let us know.

Can anyone help me, do we have to apply for the surrender certificate in the UK, or can we apply for it elsewhere?? as I have recently got naturalised, and have to travel to Malaysia to live there, was wondering to save time for myself, is it a must to apply for the surrender certificate here or could it be in Malaysia?
Also what documents do we require to send with the surrender certificate application?
Many thanks,

Thank you for your response, I did speak to the Indian Consulate and I have to apply for the surrender certificate here in the UK.
Could any one tell me do you have to send the copy of all the pages of the British passport with your application or just the important pages?
Many thanks,

Hi all
I have handed my families Indian passports at VFS Glasgow Office on 06/03/2013 for surrender.
After I have applied we have received couple of text messages-
First one on 07/03/2013 stating our applications have been dispatched to the high commission of India for processing.
Second one on 09/03/2013 stating our applications are under process at the High commission of India.
I have contacted VFS via e-mail and they informed that they can't comment any thing about progress as they forwarded it to High Commission of India.
After 9th of march 2013 till to date we haven't received any further correspondence. We have been advised that it can take upto 3 weeks
for surrender certificate and cancelled Indian passports to arrive. It has been four weeks now and we haven't received any document so far.
Does anyone know where and whom to contact?
Thank u

One quick question guys, how do you know the dates of various statuses, is there a portal where we can login and track the status of surrender of passport.

Found the answer - it can be tracked at

Hi all,
I need to surrender my and my wife's Indian passports to get surrender certificate?
If I submit application(s) in person, can I get the certificate(s) the same day? Would it take too long if I submit by post? The website claims it will take about 10 working days for the applications submitted by post. I just want to know your experiences?
Thanks

A. You can submit your application ONLY through VFS.
B. It typically takes a week to receive the certificate and there is no same day service available.
C. Postal applications also need to be routed through VFS and this will add few more days to the above mentioned process.

One other question:
The VFS website implies at places you can submit multiple applications in one envelope. For example, one postal order for all members and multiple return Royal Mail envelopes etc. Should we put in a covering letter describing how many applicants etc?
Thanks

1. Well yes - multiple documents can be sent in one envelope to VFS.
2. A covering letter is not required. The separate application forms and supporting documents for each applicant will do the job.
3. Make sure you send two special delivery envelopes along with the documents as they can return only one passport per envelope.

Any idea how long does it take for receiving surrender certificate?
I have surrendered Indian passport in VFS Edinburgh office on 22/Mar/2013.
Status is still showing as "Your application is processed and sent to the respective office of the High Commission/Consulate General of India in the UK for further assessment. Please check our website
www.in.vfsglobal.co.uk for further information on 'Processing Times'."

HI
My mom in law got her french citizenship while residing in India in 1991.
Her indian passport expired in 1984. She did not surrender her EXPIRED indian passport.
She now wants to apply for her OCI.
She is confused if she should surrender her EXPIRED indian passport now?

She will have to surrender Indian passport before she can get the OCI.
There will be a fine for late surrender of Indian passport (I think it is arroud £140 but do check on the HCI website)

Submission (@ VFS Goswell Road): 16th May, Thu
Processed and Sent to HCI: 16th May, Thu
Certificate issued: 20th May, Mon
Ready for collection@VFS: 21st May, Tue
Quite surprised to find the passport returned without corners clipped and any cancellation stamp. I presume records have been updated otherwise looking at the passport it's the same as before.
