new tier based system for uk migration

Post by adnantps » Thu Apr 26, 2007 8:41 pm

I just read in an article on work permit about the tier based system to be introduced in 2008
http://www.workpermit.com/news/2007_04_ ... ounced.htm

I see in the Skills Shortage Occupations List, November 2006 (http://workpermit.com/uk/work_permit/occupations.htm)

IT related field is not mentioned at all.

Will it effect IT ppl applying for FLR next year?

Go through the article
http://www.workpermit.com/news/2006_03_ ... ect_it.htm

It states
"
Overseas IT specialists migrating to the UK will most likely to be awarded the highest status in the UK Home Office's points-based immigration system.

The points ranking system for immigrants wishing to live and work in the UK, will categorise migrants in accordance to their skills and abilities. Most IT specialists wanting to immigrate will score highly in the new system of weightings and trade-offs.

Higher skilled IT candidates holding degrees or a PhD will need no employer sponsorship and can bring their immediate family to the UK

This article was created on 27 March 2006 before John Reid becomes Home minister. So that article is alredy out of date. Since then there is U turn in the immigration policy indlcuding HSMP.

The new rule that will be inplemeted early next years: Tier one is Scientist and enterpreneurs/Huge investors, I did not see IT professional i n this category. Anyway IT is also have been removed from Shortage occupasion list since a few years ago.

Pantaiema - Where are you getting your information? I've been unable to find anything definitive yet on what's included in Tier 1, other than the comments in the release that it will scientists and entrepreneurs.
Here's the Ukvisas press release - http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/servlet/Front ... 6967756153

I'm hoping this isn't another change that forces us out. I read that around 40,000 people are being forced out from the HSMP programme change that drops work experience. (I think that's including families, spouses, etc).

I'm not sure if I should worry about this change yet or not. The "Tier 1" changes go into effect in the beginning of 2008. My HSMP gets renewed in June 2008. If they route everyone through this new programme, it could mean a lot of problems for everyone that's here now. Especially if the "Tier 1" criteria are significantly different than HSMP.

Thoughts?

IT jobs have been removed from Shortage Occupation list since year 2002.

UK tightens requirements for IT work permits
August 29 2002

The British government has removed all IT jobs from its shortage occupation list, thus making it harder for overseas IT workers to obtain job permits for working in the UK.

The change, which takes effect from September 1 2002, was made after considering "a variety of evidence and research regarding the current state of the IT labour market," according to Work Permits (UK), the government agency tasked with issuing work visas.

The agency said this meant that all IT work permit applications which would have been considered as a Tier 1 shortage occupation (which meant the resident labour market test was waived) would now be considered under Tier 2 (where a resident labour test would be required).

It said the state of the labour market would be reviewed after three months and changes made if deemed necessary.
HSMP is the only way ahead for IT Professionals as Employers are supposed to carry out Labour Market Test across entire UK+EU+EEA
