Part-time job

Post by Yarlie_uk » Wed Oct 02, 2013 1:44 pm

Hi all,

I am on Tier1 (general) visa and working on full-time permanent job (35 hrs a week). I want to know if I can also do any part-time jobs on week ends or evenings ? anyone doing part-time job along with full-time permanent job ? :?

Do I need to inform or take permission from my permanent employer ?

Its really a matter of your company policy. Taking one is always good.

Absolutely not required.

I would suggest to check your employment contract as there could be a clause indicating the procedure.

HMRC website has good examples to deal with this.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

You do not have any visa restriction for working Part time or any employer. However your current employer might have a clause, so kindly check your employment terms. For Example if you work for Vodafone and end up some part time work for O2, its a potential conflict of interest and you might end up losing your employment with possibly no termination benefits.

When you take a part time employment you will get a different tax code (not 100% sure) this will take out more tax although in the end you will end up paying the right amount of Tax assuming you made it from single source of employment. The reason is pretty obvious you will not need to make a payment to HMRC after the end of the tax year.

Good luck
I try to give honest answers, however I might be wrong, kindly always check with your solicitor/accountant for final confirmation

Well if you start second job then most probably you have to pay tax on basic rate.

Now a days most common tax code is 944L if you do only one job.Its up to you on how you want your tax to be deducted.(I mean from part time job or from both of your jobs).

When I start my part time job I got a letter from HMRC in which they inform me about my tax calculation. In the letter they wrote that they will deduct tax from my both jobs.

I called them back and requested that I want to pay the basic rate tax only from my part time job and I don,t want any changes in permanent job tax code etc.Done.

Now I only pay tax from my NEW part time job.

thanks for the reply guys.

is it possible to be self empoyed for the part time job while being
a payee for the full time job?

I am planning to do this in order to minimise the tax I pay for the part time job . coz it is only few hours and if the extra tax it does not sound attarctive for the time spent.

thanks
