Applying for spousal visa from your non-home country

I have a UK passport and my Australian wife is applying for a spousal Visa to the UK. Can we apply for her UK Spousal visa from a country other than Australia...eg France?
Has anyone tried this?

Yes, that was one possibility, but I'll be working in England. Rather than have her wait in Australia for the visa whilst I am in England, we thought it might be easier for her to apply from France (we have friends that live there y'see). But we aren't sure if that's possible!
