My dear Blonde -

Doctors and sientistst are very worried about their futures here under HSMP.

If I was a doc, I'd feel confident that my salary is likely to be in excess of the GBP40,000 or so that gets max points on the salary criteria. That + MD/PhD degree would hedge me pretty well even in the event of future changes in criteria.

Are you so far beyond them?

Depends where they live, doesn't it?

What do you do then LankanFunkin? Cancer research? Cold Fusion scientist?

Actually, I was in oncology, though I've realigned my career path the UK with the finance & consulting fields.

Never went into Cold Fusion, cos the 101 class clashed with Wines of the World, and dammit I had my priorities!




Lighten up a bit. I know there is a lot of stuff going on in the whole HSMP space, but have some confidence in yourself and your abilities. I'm sure you'll do well - if not in the UK, somewhere else!

PASS, for the benefit of those reading, can you please comment on what field(s) you based your estimate, and availability of talent in the UK?

I'm referring to Biotech. Industries.

HS person (someone with a. good Master/ b. PhD, 3-5+ experience in biotech) can get a job (upon redundancy)

Within a month (salary ~ 25-30 K)
3-6 months (if they want a senior position ~ 40 +)

I agree that, anyone belongs to this category (biotech) won't be jobless beyond 2 months. Under these circumstances, if they are made redundant and FLR application falls immediate

a. will struggle or get away with it – depending upon his/her age
b. won’t have any problem at all

Yes, I heard doctors are having trouble getting interviews without ILR. Redundancy then would be impossible to recover from if this is the case.

Blonde, if I read those articles correctly, Liam said he will not be going back on the rules changed for the HSMP, made effective in November. However the HO will be revamping all the other visas, such as the work permits, etc etc.

Just as I said before, you can't be in favour of the new rules as they have not been announced yet. You've jumped the gun just a bit.

I'm sure you will do fine though. You will qualify for tier one on confidence alone.

Did anybody bother to tell these doctors that there may be some other areas they can explore, such as working in market research or consulting? Then theres work on the pharma side as a medical science liaison or in specialist sales that they could explore. These areas specifically mine docs for obvious reasons, and they also pay damn well - so its worth a shot to venture outside the comfort zone.

But my dear Blondie - my position still stands. Liam said he will not revert back on the criteria. For me (and I've pointed this out in my original post in this thread), old criteria = bad; new criteria = good. So his position on not going back on old criteria is a good thing for me, and while a politician's word is worth as much as dirt, the fact he publicly said that gives me some comfort or "confidence". And the new Tier 1 will be based on the HSMP. Now there is a chance that he might come out from left field and include some other new criteria in there, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

So we have a difference in opinion. It happens.
