Initial EU visa for Surrinder Singh route?

Post by DavidR98 » Sat Dec 28, 2013 11:35 pm

Suppose that the non-EU spouse of a British citizen, currently living outside Europe, needs to travel to an EU country such as France to join her spouse as the first stage of the Surrinder Singh route. The advice here seems to be that she should obtain a 'Schengen' (that is, a short-stay) visa and then register as a resident once there. However, travel on a short-stay visa normally requires a return ticket. Is it possible to obtain a visa similar to an EEA family permit so that only a one-way ticket is required for this initial journey?

Don't think any other type of visa exists in the Schengen area for this purpose. You might want to email the Embassy where you will be applying for the visa to ask them. Also, you can email the airline that you will be flying with well in advance to see if they can shed any light on the process.

It won't be a problem when you get to the Schengen border as long as your spouse has all the required documents, e.g. marriage certificate, proof of your citizenship (copy of passport etc)
