You will have to send the Originals if you are applying in person by post. You can send it by recorded delivery and also enclose a SD envelop for return of your original documents.
The facility to send copies is available to you if you are applying through NCS or through a solicitor, where they take copies of all your original documents and send attested copies (except Life in UK which has to be the original).
