Sponsored as a Teacher, can I start tutoring in own time?

Post by JS28 » Sat Jan 04, 2014 4:50 pm

Hi,

I am currently sponsored as a Tier 2 general by a college. I would like to do extra tutoring in my own time. Do I have to inform the UK immigration?

Thank you

Please read para 209 of the T2 policy guidance - Supplementary Employment. These are the rules

As a tutor you are likely to be self-employed. There have been differing opinions on the forum about whether supplementary employment under the T2 rules also covers self employment. My view is that it does provided it is properly documented both vis- à-vis your clients (by written agreements) and HMRC.

Hi Manci,

I know that we are allowed to work 20 hrs more as long as it's in the same area. As mentioned before I am a college teacher. Will it be okay to be an AQA examiner, marking GCSE papers?

I don't want to do anything that will ruin my chances of getting an extension.

Thank you

You can do supplementary work, provided you are paid by PAYE or via an umbrella company. So long as you don't open a limited company, you wouldn't be self employed and that should be ok.
The controversy is being paid through your own limted company.

only you can tell if the proposed supplemantary employment meets the requirement of being "in the same sector and at the same professional level"
