Indian passport renewal in-person application

I have the passport valid until Jan-2014.
If i submit passport renewal application now(Jan-2014) in person in the HCI, London,
Q1) do they return my current original passport now (OR) retain and send along with my renewed passport later?

Q2) In case if they don't return my current original passport now, would I be able to go for my visa extension with the receipt provided by HCI as the proof ?

Q3) Does the receipt from HCI, London contain the following information?

paper of the government or embassy

A1) No, they don't return the existed valid passport
A2) Receipt just contains first name, application submission date, fee amount.
A3) Definitely the receipt can not be accepted by the Home Office.
No full name, No Date of Birth, No explanation that the current valid passport submitted to india high commission for renewal.
If we don't get the passport within the expected time, I think we need to go to high commission office again , go through laborious process to get some document which will be acceptable to the UK home office.

Did you try asking them to return your old existing passport?
