Re: Surrendring Indian passport

Post by Prem » Tue Jan 04, 2022 10:53 pm

Hi,

Wife has her Surrender Indian passport appointment next week, have a couple of queries, if someone could be so kind and answer please:

1. The self attesting of the passport copy pages, is that just her signature and date?
2. Rather silly, but I went and brought the Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm A4 envelope from the Post office, which is just basically a plastic bag with tracking? I was expecting a hard backed envelope, is this correct or have i brought the wrong thing?

Lastly my wife was naturalized in June 2019, and her Indian passport expired on June 2019 as well. For various reasons we have not been able to do this phase as yet. She has never traveled on her Indian passport since naturalization, and its within the 3 year period, are there any extra steps we need to take?

Thanks,
Prem

Hi

Yes. Just write like self attested by and sign (Applicant) for minors it’s both parents.

Yes normal A4 with enough postage.

Yes it should be fine as I have surrendered my child passport which expired 2.5 years ago.

If you already not, just one person is enough to submit multiple family applications. You need to print the appointment letter as multiple copies and attach with each application.

Lastly please check the Adult British passport is signed otherwise you are application is going to be refused.

I have responded to your PM on the other thread

Thanks rivercam, much appreciated.

Wife had her appointment today for Surrendering her Indian passport at 1:45pm, arrived in ample time, started queuing at 1:25pm (they say arrive 15 minutes before the appointment time) went through security ,only applicants are allowed through and in case of family application one person per family (for OCI and paper visas).

They asked us for the printed appointment letter, checked her name was in the list, checked her application and asked/checked if we had copies of Indian passport and UK Passport (checking for signature in the UK one). Gave her a token, she waited in the very busy waiting room and I waited outside.

She was out before 1:55pm, got called at 1:45pm, the actual process took 5 minutes.

What they asked for:

Token
Appointment Letter
Application (with Photo stuck on) & Declaration form
Indian passport
UK passport
Copies of both passports
Copy of Naturalisation Certificate
Self Addressed Envelope (Special Delivery Guaranteed)

Total cost £128.44
Surrender Passport Fee £117.00
Consular Surcharge £2.00
Service Charges £6.20
SMS Charges £1.67
VAT £1.57

My wife said the lady was very pleasant, it will take 7-8 working days to receive the No Surrender Certificate.

The only strange thing is see only requested 1 photo rather than 2, even when my wife asked.

Current status when checking:
Passport application along with fee details have been received. The same is under processing at the Embassy/Consulate.

Will update....

Day 2 after submitting application, Application Status: Surrender certificate has been printed.

That's a bit quick? No updates via email or SMS as yet, just using the tracking system.

Finally got my documents including Indian Passport back from HMPO, so booked an appointment for surrendering my passport in Edinburgh. No appointments available in London, but many appointments available in Edinburgh even for the next day!

Dates:
Appointment for surrender of documents: 13th Jan (Edinburgh)
Documents received: waiting

Overall the experience was really smooth and I was done in 20 min. 4 applications (self, wife, 2 minor kids). I was the only person who travelled to Edinburgh to submit all these applications and it was perfectly fine. Did not require any statement from my wife even. Was told that the docs can be expected by end of next week. Love the desi efficiency once an appointment is available!

Hi PS1234,

I am in a similar situation. I am based in London but could not find any appointments to surrender my passport for any of the London centers so I have booked an appointment for Edinburgh.

Wanted to check with you:

1. My understanding is you can book an appointment at any center i.e. Edinburgh, London or Birmingham regardless of your residential address - please confirm that this is correct?

2. While registering on the passport website, I need to select the Edinburgh jurisdiction as my appointment is there at the registration stage itself? Kindly confirm

Thanks in advance

All done, 3 day turnaround, timeline below:

Application Date: 11/01/2022
VFS office: VFS London Goswell (In-person)
Application sent to High Commission: 11/02/2022
HCI issued surrender certificate: 12/02/2022
Online Status (processed) / received at VFS: 13/02/2022
Received Surrender certificate: 14/02/2022

Only 1 email alert received on 13/02/2022, saying processed application has been received at VFS, rest of info gathered from tracking status.

Travelling to India in early April, debating whether to go for Paper Visa because of the short turnaround or OCI, but not sure on processing times, need to research.

1. My understanding is you can book an appointment at any center i.e. Edinburgh, London or Birmingham regardless of your residential address - please confirm that this is correct? YES. But make sure that you apply to the Edinburgh centre - ie the top of the form says Edinburgh CGI, not London. This is possible when you register for an account on the Portal3 website.

2. While registering on the passport website, I need to select the Edinburgh jurisdiction as my appointment is there at the registration stage itself? Kindly confirm YES. As above

Dear ps1234,

Hope you are well and good!

I plan to book 'Surrder of Passport' & later for OCI @edinburgh as only slots available immediately.

Can you confirm what all orginals, copies needs to be taken?
I checked on https://visa.vfsglobal.com/one-pager/in ... n-passport
but they later say "This list is not exhaustive and does not guarantee a Surrender Certificate".

I plan to apply only for myself and 2 kids. Not planning to take my kids with me as I need to travel from London?

Do my wife needs to selfattest any of copies of my kids ? Or any letter confirming she is happy with the submission?

Thanks in advance.

Dear mm27 ,
Have you already booked your appointment ? I am awaiting UK passport and plan to book for 1st week of Feb

Hello I applied for surrender certificate at the vfs edinburgh on 21st Jan 2022. I haven’t gotten any email notification. On 28th I checked the online tracking on vfs website and it was updated on that very day itself to: Your application is processed and sent to the respective office of the High Commission/Consulate General of India in the UK for further assessment. Please check our website www.in.vfsglobal.co.uk for further information on 'Processing Times'.

Has my surrender certificate been issued and how many days should it take to recieve the surrender certificate

Hello,
We are applying as a family of 4. How many envelopes will be required for all of us? And can we bring our own envelopes?

Thank you.

Hi Lamdena,

I have applied for Surrender certificate on 24th Jan 2022 but there is still no update received by email or message from vfs until now. Also, please help me know how do we check the application status on vfs website and what is going to be the application I'd. Everything seems so confusing.

Thanks,
Kaushik

This thread is super useful but Just wanted to clarify or confirm

Quick ques: for the minor surrender application form.
1 underneath the photo, the minor has to write a name or thumb impression?
2. Second page of application under declaration - Either parents can sign?
3. The separate declaration, minor name should be written in the space at the top and either parent can sign and put the location & date?
4. for the minor supporting document - does the minor has to write their name or thumb impression for self attestation in all the documents such as passports, naturalisation certificate etc? or either the parents can self attest on their behalf and put their signature

Lastly the VFS supporting documents says " Self-attested photocopy of Indian passport (All used pages)" - does this we need to take copies all the stamped page in the passport and self attest it by ourselves?

and for the self attestation for adult, would the signature is sufficient of we need to write - "Attested by:"

please help me with the above answers, I have my surrender certificate appointment in couple of weeks of time.

Finally got my surrender certificates today - 20 days after my appointment. This was more delayed than usual because I heard that a lot of the staff at CGI were infected with Covid and were away. Things should hopefully pick back up now.

Surrendered Passports on 4Mar - Friday. Site showed Review- Ready - Printed status on 7Mon. That was super quick but haven't received the certificates yet. Royal Mail status is still invalid. So, they haven't been posted yet.
