£25,700 Maintenance Requirement from June 2012 according to

£25,700 Maintenance Requirement from June 2012 according to Leaked Cabinet Letter

Sunday Telegraph reports that a leaked letter from Home Secretary, Theresa May, to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg says the coalition government intends to introduce new rules on family migration from June this year. The letter says the minimum maintenance requirement for a spouse or partner will be £25,700 a year before tax, and up to £62.600 for those with three children. Probationary period will be extended from 2 to 5 years, English requirement will be strengthened, and a higher burden of proof for genuine relationship will be demanded. It says nothing about ban on external sponsorship or if any savings are to be considered along with UK sponsor's income.

So it looks as though the government is pressing ahead with tightening the family migration route. Implementation from June is later than originally expected, which was April, but much earlier than October or 2013 some were expecting. The main proposals are broadly in line with the recommendations of the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) published last November. We still wait to see if outside sponsorship or savings will be allowed.

Sunday Telegraph says that renewed tension between coalition partners over these proposals is expected, as the Liberal Democrats favour lower maintenance requirements and amnesty for all illegal immigrants currently in UK.

We just have to wait for official announcement, which can't be very far away, maybe in April or May.

Ministers plan major immigration crackdown - Telegraph

This is drastic change in the settlement visa; many people will suffer because of these limitations in the Immigration Law.

Yeah you are right; this is really worrying for genuine families and curtail the sham marriages. Extending the probationary period as well from 2 to 5 years.

But the consequences after implementing these rules, they are really horrible. What about those ppl whose income less than 26000 pounds? Who are not professional but working hard for their near and dear ones.

From 2009, there are lots of changes have been taken place. It is drastic change in the history of changing laws in UK. Hope it will be good enough for all genuine families.

Actually, these are tactics to stop the inflow of immigrants into UK country.

I think only passport and latest TB Certificate required to be submitted. I suggest you to tell your hubby bring all the relevant documents to be on safe side.
BEST OF LUCK

If you guys know anyone who is planning to apply for a Settlement VISA, I would urge you to get them to hurry and submit it before the rule changes. It will probably be in place for a few months, maybe 6-10 months, before some supreme court realises the idiocy of it all.

£13k should be more than enough for someone to get through life without any trouble. Just how many many young men/women getting married earn £25k? Very few do.

Anyways, anyone planning on applying, don't delay, do it before the law changes and change it will.

But fortunately he has to submit his passport first at Embassy for stamping. then come to UK to see you.........right.......
Don't forget Embassy Letter.

Exactly.. i feel so much for the people who have their loved one abroad and earn less.. i understand the need to get rid of sham marriages but punishing genuine couples who don't earn enough is totally wrong

One look at people's signatures and you'll get an idea of how long it's currently taking. Most people who applied in early Jan have not had any replies so you being the end of Jan, you should be prepared to wait another 2/3 weeks.

By the way, which centre did your wife apply in? As most people who applied in the Jan-early Feb period had a status change on the 4th of March.

Firstly, it's extremely unlikely that your friend got a response within 3 weeks, perhaps 3 working weeks, but sooner than that is unlikely, so ask them if they are actually telling the truth or exagerating, I think it's the later.

As for how long you can expect to wait, expect to wait around 10-12 weeks, most of the January applicants, are still awaiting responses. As for being nervous, just try to keep yourself busy, however difficult it is. At the end of it, when you are united with your spouse, it will feel like it was only a 5 min wait.
