If your gaps were caused by the Home Office saying that the fee wasn't paid, it is essential that you require them to prove the fee was paid - directly, in writing, in the grounds of appeal. Then the burden of proof shifts to the Home Office to prove your application was invalid, not on you to prove it was valid.
