Apologies if this seems to be a daft question - but is a 4EUFam card in Ireland the same as a "Type 4" GNIB card?

The EU fam 4 is the same as the normal stamp 4 in the sense that it entitles you to the same benefits within Ireland ie employment but the EU fam 4 has other European benefits as a spouse of an EEA citizen.

Stamp 4 can be issued to spouses of Irish citizens. Stamp4EUFAM is issued to spouses of other EU citizens, or EU citizens who have been "exercising their treaty rights abroad" (i.e. residing in another EU country).

Stamp 4 is granted under Irish domestic law whereas the Stamp4EUFAM is granted under an EU Directive (also now in Irish Law). Both allow the same rights, but the Stamp4EUFAM is recognised by other EU countries, so allows the bearer freedom to travel to other EU countries without having to apply for a visa. Ca.Funke has a very detailed thread on the countries who allow persons to travel without Visas on holding a Stamp4EUFAM.
