Your wife can surrender your passport
My wife surrendered my passport on 3/8/2011, without any authorization letter

Hi Guys, I m in process of applying oci and have following questions.
1) Do you get the original Indian passport back with surrender certificate
2) Do you have to submit all old/expired passport also or just the last valid passport. My ILR stamp was on the passport which had expired.
Lastly, is in person surrender any quicker then postal?

rnr70,
I went to VFS Barbican on Friday 2nd September 2011. Reached there at around 8.45. Was out by 9.30. There were only 3 people ahead of me. Very straight forward.
Recommend to carry all originals including British passport and expired Indian passports (if any)

Today I called VFS to check whether they need self-attestation on all photocopied pages. The guy answered me said yes. As I made the call I just want to double check all the details about the documents enclosed. He said we need to enclose all the old passports which are not valid now. We are a family of 4. Totally 10 passports. He said yes. I told him that the website mentioned only about the latest passport which was used for the naturalisation. He said that his suggestion is to send all the passports. I cannot understand why we call the VFS for suggestions. If there is a requirement they have to mention that. Who he is to give suggestions. I told him that their website mentioned only the latest passports. He said that is wrong and according to his suggestion I have to send all the passports that has been cancelled as well.
Than I asked him how many special delivery envelops I need to enclose as the website mentioned that one for two passports. Then he asked t hold on a minute to check with someone. It is a premium call to charge 95 pence per minute and I was waiting for 5 minutes for that guys ignorance. After five minutes he said sorry for the delay and said that if I like I can submit only the latest ones and if IHC needs the old ones then they will contact me directly. He has no guts to say that he suggested me wrongly that we need to submit all old passports and only the latest ones are needed.
I submitted the application my post today for four of us and let us see how long it takes.

Hi,
Yes, I am sure its frustating.
Its best to go through this forum, where you can find most answers.
Why would you need cancelled passport for 'surrender certificate'.?
All the best, it was taking 10 days by post until about a month ago but I believe from last couple of weeks it has slowed down a bit.

Hi Gidoc
Thanks for your reply. The guy at VFS suggested me to send all cancelled passport. I don't know why he suggested that. IMHO, VFS all over the world works like this. They try to get all the documents evidence for visa application or other related stuff, even though some of them are not necessary. If we say those documents are not necessary, they immediately they say we take risk and they cannot guarantee the success of the application. Then it is up to us to go ahead and submit with or without the documents they asked for. I did not send our cancelled passports.
Yes I agree that this forum gives more information than the real service agencies. I just wanted to confirm whether self-attestation on all pages is necessary or not as one of the fellow member mentioned that it is not necessary any more. That is the reason I called VFS. The VFS guy said that we need to self-attest all pages and we did.

I am planning to apply for SC by postal application as well. Wasn't clear on VFS website if the fee is for application for family (me and my wife) or per passport? Can anyone clarify this for me
Also for those who applied by post, did you use postal order or can we use any other method of payment as well?
thanks

Sorry but when you were sure that old expired passports are not required, then why did you double check with VFS in the first place?
You say that the person on phone gave you the wrong suggestion because the website only asks for the latest passport, but when you regard the info on HCI website as correct, why was there a need to confirm it?
