1) youll need your passport original yes at the time of application
2) yes your wife can apply. You dont need to be there physically present.

Are you sure brother is there any alternative we have appointment booked for submitting application on Thursday but currently I'm in Glasgow and working full time. If I enclose all colour photo copies of my passport will that be ok?
Thanks for you reply

I told you my experience. I applied and had to take my wife's passport along. They litreally check each and every page you submit, they verify it with the originals. Why don't you post your passport to india so your wife can carry it with her when she's applying?

We have been waiting over 6 months now and it hasn’t been a good experience for us!
Applications from South Asia take longer than elsewhere in the world.
Changes to British passport services in Pakistan wrote:There are different processing times for different types of passport:
Renewal of a passport: approximately 4 weeks
First time applications: approximately 6 months
These long processing times are due to a high level of attempted passport fraud and identity theft in South Asia. To tackle this, our teams carry out detailed checks before we issue passports.
Obie opines that legal action needs to be taken against HMPO with regards to such delays.
If you google "HMPO India Pakistan" or "HMPO South Asia", it is interesting to see the jobs that the HMPO advertises for that region:
document verification officers and
counter fraud officers.

Does this also apply to US citizens born in India ?
