overseas indian citizen or PIO card

Post by vinay shanthi » Sun Aug 05, 2007 2:49 pm

hi everyone

this might help people who are citizens of other countries but of indian origin or those planning to go down this route.

see the plus and minus points of both schemes and decide which is more beneficial to you.

also there are a few adverse effects of having these schemes depending on your individual situation, so before getting it think about which scheme you want.

for overseas indian citizen scheme see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_nat ... p_of_India

for person of indian origin card see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_nat ... p_of_India

for interaction with other countries laws see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_nat ... other_laws

for overseas indian citizen application from uk see

for person of indian origin card application from uk see

hope this information is useful for a few

have a nice day... vinay shanthi

go to your local photo studio and ask for it. Apparently some people have taken standard photo's and snipped a bit off. I don't know if you can do it or not.

Post by TintinHerge » Tue Aug 28, 2007 11:00 pm

Its already been a year since I got my British passport and I wish to cancel my Indian passport. Does anyone how to go about it ? i.e. is there a special queue for that in the Indian Embassy or can i do it by post , etc ?

I just got mine cancelled. Just apply for an Indian visa,PIO or OIC and they will cut the corners. Or if you don't want any of the above just send it any of the Indian consulate by post with a request to cancel

Thanks maveli62. I will post it to them tomorrow and try my luck.

On second thoughts, If cutting the corners is all they do, I can probably do it myself at home ; )

LOL !!! Don't know what else they do. I send 3 passports of my family and all three got cut and two of them got a 'CANCELLED' stamped on the second page.

Not sure whether you have the royal chapa "Ragdha Kiya" that accompanies the word "Cancelled". Your cancelled passport must have those key words on the first and last couple of pages.
If you apply for an OCI visa, it comes as a pre-paid service !

Birth Certificate

Post by vishal » Wed Nov 21, 2007 8:46 pm

Hi, I checked the HCI London website about applying for an OCI. One of the documents required is a Birth certificate. If I do not have my birth certificate - but do have my secondary school certificate indicating my birth date - will that suffice for the OCI or will it be rejected. Has anybody on this forum faced a situation like this. Any advise would be much appreciated.

If you have your current/expired/cancelled India passport then you don't need to send birth certificate/ SSC

Recent applicants - questions for you!

Post by pchowla » Wed Feb 27, 2008 10:19 am

I am finally getting around to applying for my OCI because I have to travel to India at the end of April. That leaves me worried though... So if anyone has made an application recently can you help with answers to a few questions:

1) How long did it take to get the OCI certificate? The website says 8-12 weeks. 8 weeks is cutting it close for when I need to travel. But other reports on this board said 4-6 weeks. Can someone please report recent processing times?

2) How many people show up each day. They only give out 15 tokens a day - but is this really a problem - are there usually more than 15 people applying each day? How early should I get there to queue up?

3) How long do they take to do the processing once I have a token. They say the counter is open from 10:00 - 12:30. But could I expect to be out of there by 10:30 if I have queued for a while?

Any help on these topics would be really appreciated!

OCI fee

Post by agganesh » Thu Mar 06, 2008 5:20 pm

It sounds silly but HCI London website is not stating clearly.

I am applying for OCI for myself, wife and 2 kids. The website say the fee will be 165 pounds for each applications (not applicants). Since we are all applying together do I have to pay 165 or should we pay 165 each?

If anyone applied OCI with one more person please let me know.

165 X 4 is what you have to pay. With 2 kids you may be better off if you go for PIO card. PIO card for kids are cheaper.

Thanks maveli but they got PIO cards already but I thought it would be better if they OCI. No need to renewal etc.
