Finally, I got it

Post by Kantaloobi » Tue Jul 06, 2004 5:48 pm

:D I have finally received my Certificate of Citizenship today, 17 months after I applied. Many thanks to the guys on this forum for their help and useful tips throughout the long process from applying for ILR to getting the citizenship  . A journy that took nearly 4 years.

Congratulations though that was quite a long processing time - were there complicating issues around residence? Also did you have to take an oath and language tests. Next step www.ukpa.gov.uk

Many thanks Kayalami

language tests!! I would take that as an insult!! Do u mean that my language is that bad??!! Just kidding. I didn't have to take the test becaue of my qualifications, and I had to take the oath infront of a lawer because i had applied before the citizenship ceremony came into force.
I had to wait a year for ILR, a year before I could apply for citizenship and a year and a half to get it. So it is 3.5 years to be exact.

The Oath is mandatory if you don't come from one of the countries where the queen is head of state, such as Canada. I am not sure about the language test.

Congratulations on getting British Citizenship!

I'm very curious to know if you got along with your Certificate of Citizanship a letter or a guidance note that explains what you can and/or should do next (such as apply for a passport and register to vote). If so, could you please share with us what that note says? Thanks!

Hi Joseph
I got a congratulating letter saying that I can apply for a passport using the enclosed application form, and a guidance to dual nationality holders. Nothing about registering to vote.

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm surprised they didn't mention registering to vote. Perhaps you already had registered because you were already a Commonwealth Citizen?

Anyway, in case you don't already know, all British and Commonwealth citizens are required to register to vote with their local council election offices, even though they are not required to vote.
