Absences from UK - How to Calculate

Hello

When calculating time out of the country, are the days you fly in and out excluded from the calculation? My friend is applying for leave to remain and her visits outside the UK (she is from NZ) total more than 6 months, so we are looking at every possible angle for her to reduce this time!
