Indefinite leave to remain as spouse - citizenship help plea

Post by mudbutt » Fri Nov 09, 2012 11:37 am

I would like to get some advice or any help with this topic. I got married to my wife who is a British citizen in 2010 I am currently coming to the end of my two Yrs spouse visa and I am due to apply for IRL next month. My question is after I get the ILR how long do I have to wait before I can apply for citizenship?
I have been in the UK since 2002 as a student and I have always done all my visa applications on my own but I am not familiar with the next steps in the process. I read the information on ukba website but it just confused me even more. From my understanding in order to get citizenship you must have been in the country for 3 yrs when you apply now do I have to wait one more yr or does the fact that I have been here since 2002 count ( I think I may have just answered my own question but please do correct me if I'm wrong, I need to have been here for 3yrs without immigration restrictions of which a student visa has restrictions! so I still need to do one more year on ILR I think ) please help and thank you in advance.

You may apply for naturalisation (as spouse of a British citizen) immediately after being granted settlement.
Life isn't fair, but you can be!
