Scottish education for non eea family

Post by bluecole2 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:32 pm

Hi guy, once again I have come to enquire about something important that could be useful to other or future members of this forum.

Whether this section of the forum is the right place to post this topic I don't know. So please pardon me if it is not. But what I believe is that this topic in some way relate to how eea national may exercise there right.

The problem is since the increment in University tuition fee in UK (except Scotland) this like many others as distracted me for going into further education. Nevertheless I see myself living in the UK for the foreseeable future and have a burning desire to make use of my time, to studying without the debt that's comes with it.

I had since being looking at opportunities to study in Scotland as I have heard it free for Scottish and EU students. But what I do not know is does the free education applies to EU national exercising treaty in UK.

Myself non eea and my spouse lives in London and we will like to relocate to Scotland mainly to take advantage of free education that may apply if possible. One way we may be eligible is through living in Scotland but what I want to know is how much time spent residing in Scotland will make one eligible as home student?

I have check some relevant website- link below but do not understand much of the information provided. It does not specify whether or not some people outside of Scotland may be eligible or how much time must be spent in Scotland before being eligible. And also do we have to be living there before applying?

Anyway, please advice as best as you can on our right to be able to study in Scotland as Scottish without ending up with mountain of debt and how to make sure our eea rights are not being trampled upon

Thanks for your time spent in reading this and for all help and advice.

Just to point out another option: the Open University has considerably lower fees and very flexible schedules to fit around your work. Granted, it is still a lot of money, but you save several thosands a year compared to traditional universities as well as a costly move with all the fuss. If you know another language, there are even more and better options around. For example, if you can speak German, try the Fernuni Hagen. This renowned university does not discriminate between foreign and German nationals, as long as the applicant can speak German and can prove that they meet the entry requirements. It offers many courses, prices begin at 370 Euro per semester full time studies (~600 pound per year). Quite an incentive to learn another language, isn't it?

My recollection is that you have to be resident in Scotland at the date the course starts. I also recall to be classed as a home student that you have to have been resident in the United Kingdom and islands in the 3 years prior to the commencement of the course (not simply resident in Scotland). As I say, this is from personal memory. Hope that helps.

Thanks Gyfrinachgar, for the tips. Unfortunately learning German isn't an option for me. Until now still finding it challenging to grasp French. But It's something I will take note of for future reference.

Thanks el patron, I understood the3 years residence but I suppose I will be liable to pay tuition fee to study in Scotland because we have been living in London all along.

I like to think living in UK rather than England will work for me. For example; British student who lived in England and want to study in Scotland will be liable to pay tuition fee, wouldn't they?

This is so confusing and there's a lot of other things to consider such as jobs, moving home, applying for the course and hope I get a place amongst other stuffs.

More advice and contribution will be appreciated guys

Thanks
