Is obtaining a dutch citizenship possible through Ancestry?

Post by conniematthee » Tue Nov 20, 2012 12:00 pm

Hi All, Can anyone please assist me. I am a afrikaans speaking south african that is able to trace back my ancesters to where they first came to south africa from holland in 1654 or round about that time. Is it possible to obtain a dutch citizenship through ancestry and if so how do I go about accually registering for this as being a Afrikaner in South Africa is no longer a viable option and raising a family in this country would be way too risky.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to any reply.

Thanx

Connie Matthee

As far as I know, you cannot claim Dutch citizenship based on where your ancestry line originated from. It is only through your parents. One or both of your parents must be a Dutch citizen.
Every child who is born to a married Dutch father or mother automatically acquires Dutch nationality at birth, even if that child is born outside the Netherlands or one of the parents is not a Dutch national. This rule has applied since 1985. A child born before 1 January 1985 to a Dutch mother and a non-Dutch father may opt for Dutch nationality. The child of an unmarried Dutch mother automatically acquires Dutch nationality at birth. This rule applied even before 1985.

It's an interesting thought, but I don't think it will work for a descendant of 17-th century emigrants.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands only came into being in the 19th century, when the Vienna Congress redrew the map of Europe after the Napoleontic Wars.

And before that the concept of nationality hardly existed.

Hi Connie

I have the same question as you and would like to know if you managed to get more information on this.

@surikaboth, member connie lasted visited over 5.5 years ago and only ever posted once.

Suggest ask your question in own topic and/or google Netherlands government website.

I should be able to claim British citizenship by ancestry because my ancestors, the Romans, were here about 2000 years ago and well before the Anglo Saxons.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist!)
