I have heard first few thousands ( 4000 to be precise)cof earning is tax free, is that right? I work for NHS and have worked for more than 18 months. If it is true can i ask for refund?

The refun is not from NHS. the refund should be from inland revenue..I think.
You better visit their official site about the details, but I am sure the first few thousands that you earn should be free of tax. If you have been taxed on this , you are entitled to a refund
