ILR and return of documents

I applied for ILR based on 10yrs long residency on 25/8/12 what I consider as a straight forward application which is still awaited. My visa is due to expire on 15/4/13 and I am also eligible to apply on ILR based on Tier 1. I am tempted to request for return of documents and go through the second route. has anyone treid getting documents back.
