Attested passport copy for Schengen visa

On the VFS website on the documents required page it says an applicant must include an "attested copy of passport" of the inviting person to the Schengen country. Can anyone explain what this is and how important it is?

That would probably mean by to be attested by the immigration of the Schengen country. Which country are you trying to apply for a Schengen visa?
