Greek & UK dual citizenship??

Post by tensailee » Sun Feb 04, 2007 10:39 am

A quick question:

Does anyone know if the Greek government recognises dual nationality? Does a Greek national have to give up the Greek passport if he naturalises as a UK citizen?

Many thanks

Judging from this article, it seems that Greece now recognises multiple citizenship.

In fact, as far as I am aware, it is virtually impossible for a Greek citizen to renounce that status even if he or she wants to. A Greek/British dual citizen will likely be treated by the Greek authorities as if he or she is solely a Greek citizen.

Incidentally, if he has a Greek passport issued before 2006:
http://www.qantas.com.au/info/flying/be ... lDocuments

"The Greek Embassy in Australia have advised that from midnight on 31 December 2006 all Greek passports issued before 1 January 2006 will be automatically cancelled by the Greek government. In order to avoid disruption to intended international travel, holders of Greek passports issued before 1 January 2006 who are planning international travel after 1 January 2007 are strongly advised to contact their nearest Greek Embassy or Consulate to obtain new passports.

Many thanks for your replies, Marco and JAJ.

JAJ, thanks for the reminder. He's already got his new biometric passport in November 2006.
