Naturalisation before ceremonies

Post by Marco 72 » Tue Mar 06, 2007 8:32 am

How did naturalisation use to work before the government introduced citizenship ceremonies a few years ago? Did people just receive their naturalisation certificates in the mail? How did they go about taking the oath of allegiance?

As far as I know you just simply received your naturalisation certificate in the post, there were no citizenship ceremonies.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

And citizens of Commonwealth countries for whom the Queen was already the Head of State didn't even have to do an oath of allegiance at all, because they were already her subjects. This has changed because although Canadian citizens, for example, already owe the Queen allegiance, they do so in her right as Queen of Canada. Canadians becoming British must know acknowledge her role as Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The Home Office sent a special form to you, which you had to take to a commissioner for oaths (solicitor), take the oath, sign it and return it to the Home Office.

Then you got your certificate in the mail.
