Reference checking for EC

I applied for EC on monday from Bangalore. The British emabassy in Chennai has contacted one of my previous employers today for a reference check. Can anybody share their experience on reference checks for EC

As far as I know, reference checks at EC stage are done ONLY if the ECO suspects the authenticity of claims / supporting documentation.

I have been travelling to UK since a decade on personal / business trips but never had this sort of reference check done on any of my EC applications. I had applied for EC on basis of HSMP on 26-Feb and had received my passport back in less than 48 hrs.

My EC is not over yet. I might get it early next week, The status on the VFS site still is the same.
