Post by haroldhe » Wed May 23, 2007 8:38 am

We are New Zealand permanent residents. Now after 1 1/2 year we wish to work (and live) in Australia. Sorry Kiwi's
Do we need extra VISA's since we are not NZ citizens yet!!

Cheers, Harold

New Zealand Permanent Residents

Post by Vicki » Wed May 23, 2007 9:40 pm

Hi Harold,

If you are not a New Zealand citizen you will need to apply for a visa which allows you to migrate permanently to Australia.

New Zealand citizens have a special category visa subclass 444 by virtue of having a NZ passport. This visa allows NZ citizens to live and work in Australia. Persons of other nationalities who hold passports of their country of origin cannot unfortunately benefit from the 444 as they are not NZ citizens.

Hope this is of assistance.

Kind regards,
Vicki (MARN: 0531177)

The answer is NO.

Most people used to use NZ as back door to Australia. Acquiring permanent residency of Australia is rather difficult in comparison to NZ.

Only NZ citizens (not permanent residents) are free to work in Australia.

With recent changes, one needs to spend 5 years in NZ to be a citizen. (pressure from foreign govts. forced the change).

¿Pressure from foreign governments? What pressure was that?

pressure to increase the time period from 3 years to 5 years to acquire NZ passport.

A NZ passport can take you places without any need for a visa such as countries like Australia, USA, etc. Permanent residents are bounded by limitations as per their respective nationality.

Yes, indeed, a NZ passport is one of the best passports in the world for travel.

But what pressure was exerted on the NZ government by other governments? My understanding was that the NZ goverment increased the time needed to acquire NZ citizenship because it was felt that the time was too short and did not necessarily demonstrate particular commitment to NZ.
