I have carried photocopies of my passport/Biometric card , Life in UK, salary slips , marriage certificate etc but they have kept my original employer letters as i didn't photocopied them.
Its good to take photo copies of supporting documents excluding bank statements.
in my case my first visa was granted on 1st April 2009 therefore including 90 day grace period i have completed 5 yrs on 1st April 2014 therefore it was 5 yrs and 17 days

Me and my wife are applying for ILR soon and what some information on cohabitation documents.
We live in a flat where we pay just rent. All bills inclusive including council tax
So the following documents I have got but is it sufficient.
For myself-main applicant
1. Hsbc bank statement-current account - for last 2 years
2. Barclays bank statement for last 2 years
3. Santander bank statement for last 2 years
4. Hsbc credit card statement
5. T-Mobile bill for last 2 years
6. Provisional driving licence confirming current address
7. HMRC letter
8. Employer reference letter confirming address
9. CRB from work
10. Previous letter from UKBA home office tier1 general extension
For dependant applicant-my wife
1. Santander bank statement-last 2 years
2. Virgin media internet bill-last 2 years
3. NHS appointment letters for general health
4. Previous letter from UKBA home office tier1 general extension
5. Provisional driving licence confirming current address
6. Tesco monthly points claimed statement for 2 years
Following documents we got on joint names
1. HSBC joint bank current account for 2 years
2. Marriage certificate
3. Tenancy agreement
Note: Following documents we got but I don’t know whether we can use it or not because the documents relate to my son who is just 5 months old and we don’t want to apply for Indian passport as we are planning to apply for naturalisation directly once we get our ILR sorted but since we are not including him in our application, just worried if CW at PEO will raise un-necessary questions and create confusion
1. Full UK birth certificate
2. Reference letter from church
3. Baptism certificate from church
4. Letter from midwife
5. Letter from health visitor
6. GP/doctor family registration at NHS-includes my son’s name along with us
kindly suggest me if I got enough documents or not
and also can I include my documents related to my son as well
what else documents can I add

5. Letter from health visitor

Above documents you can consider for co-habitation
you don't have to submit whole 2 years statements rather just pick one document from each spreaded across two years.. take three-four month GAP
Good Luck
