How bad is the Penalty?

Post by Aneeth » Fri Jun 06, 2014 10:41 am

Hi Everyone,
Your opinion on the below will be much appreciated.

I recently got British Passport and was planning to Surrender my Indian Passport. However there is an urgent need to go to India and I am thinking of travelling with my Indian Passport and Pay the penalty (because when I travel back from India, I'll be out of the 3 months grace period).

I know that the Penalty money is high but I'm happy to bite the bullet on that one but my questions are:
1. Am I right in saying I'll have to pay penalty only when I surrender the Indian Passport and not during/before/after the actual travel?
2. How bad is having a penalty? Will my name go on the government records as an Offender forever?
3. Will they print anything on my OCI Card/Booklet or OCI Sticker in British Passport that I'm an offender?

Thanks.

penalty is £145 per travel payable at the time of passport surrender.
there will be no records anywhere...you'll be asked to pay the penalty fee in addition to the normal surrender and VFS fees..that's it.

perhaps you can also try to surrender passport in india (if time permits), and apply for an exit permit to return back.

I assume that after paying the £145 penalty fine, the normal surrender and VFS fee can be paid later? .. or is this paid at the same time when being fined?

Who is the penalty fee paid to? .. and where?
Many thanks

it's the other way - you pay surrender fee and VFS fee and submit application to surrender your passport.

they'll review your application and ask you to pay additional penalty

you pay the penatly fee (again to VFS) and receive your surrender certificate.
