Can I apply for ILR ?

I was granted entry clearance on 09/Sept/2004 as visitor , I arrived in the UK on 19/Sept/2004. I left the UK on 09/March/2005. I applied again to come as as student ,I was granted student entry clearance on 29/August/2005. I arrived in the UK on 12/Sept/2005. Throughout I have successfully studied and extended my leave to remain. My current leave to remain is until April 2016.I only left the UK once for 25 days in 2008 when I visited my family back home.

Can I apply for indefinite leave to remain in August 2014 ?

No, you can't apply for ILR in August 2014 as your entry clearance was granted in August 2005 after your visitor visa had expired. So there is a break in continuous residence.
However you are eligible to apply upto 28 days before 12 Sep 2015.

I agree that continuous residence was broken but not because of applying after leave expiry, but rather because of a 187 days absence.
