What is the process after submission of application?

I've submitted my application and done the biometrics. Now I'm awaiting a decision. Do I receive any notifications that my application has been received and is being processed or anything like that? Or do they only email when they want extra docs or to say a decision has been made? Anyone know whether there is an order in which the applications are processed, e.g. visits, then points based applications followed by dependents? Or whether it's simply first in best dressed.
