Regarding to get the British Passport

Hi,
My grandfather was a Singapore citizen since 1957. At that time Singapore was under the control of UK and its colonies. I heard from my friend that i am eligible to get the British passport now. But i don't know the method to initiate this process. I have the details of my grandfather's citizenship that he got from the Singapore government at the time of 1957 along with his Singapore passport. Also he is no more with me. Presently, I am studying MS in UK and i am now in tier 4 general visa(Student visa) category.Can anyone guide me properly to get the British passport please?
